Inspire potential CPAs to pursue the designation and enroll in the CPA program by sharing your education and career experiences as a CPA. You will be asked to be either a keynote speaker or a panelist with other CPAs and/or CPA candidates at a CPA Alberta recruiting event.

Time Commitment: Anywhere from one to four hours.

This program helps aspiring CPAs develop a mentoring relationship that can lead to insights, opportunities, and improved skills. The program is currently looking for mentors to take part in the Mentorship Program.

CPA Networkers are invited to specific events throughout the year to network with prospective CPAs, speak with them about their career paths, and help them understand how the CPA designation can help them meet their goals.

The purpose of the Committee is to the assist the CPA Alberta Board regarding recommendations and exposure drafts relevant to Alberta, including those from the Independence Task Force, Uniform Rules of Professional Conduct, Professional Liability Insurance Committee, and Continuing Professional Development Committee. Other responsibilities include providing recommendations or potential changes to the Board (or its designate) in respects to the rules of professional conduct or guidance that should be forwarded to the Uniform Rules Standing Committee.

Members of the Complaints Inquiry Committee (CIC) assist CPA Alberta in maintaining the reputational obligations in accordance with the Act, regulations, by-laws, and resolutions.

The CIC is the decision maker on whether or not allegations of unprofessional conduct are referred to the Discipline Tribunal Roster Chair for a hearing.

Time Commitment: One eight hour meeting day four times per year, with an additional minimum preparation time of 10 hours for each eight hour meeting day. A minimum three year term.

The CPA Alberta Achievement Awards recognize individuals whose achievements in their career, the community, and the profession have brought honor to the profession. Recognition is given in four categories: Lifetime Achievement, Fellows of the Chartered Professional Accountants, Distinguished Accomplishment, and Early Achievement.

CPA Alberta Awards Nominations Committee Members assist in generating and supporting nominations for the CPA Alberta Achievement Awards. Members also maintain active communications with CPAs, candidates, and employers to encourage nominations for the Awards, as well as compiles a prospect list of potential award recipients.

CPA Alberta Awards Review Committee Members assist in reviewing and assessing all materials, documents, and reasons for the nomination, of all award applications. A summary of each potential award recipient is sent to the CPA Alberta Board for its consideration and approval.

The CPA Alberta Board consists of 12 members—nine CPAs and three public representatives. Being a member of the Board requires a time commitment of 10-15 days per year, depending on the specific responsibilities assigned to the Board Member. The Board usually meets four times per year. Meetings are regularly held in Edmonton and Calgary, and may be held throughout the province. Board members are also encouraged to attend key CPA Alberta events. Board members are elected for a three-year term (maximum two terms).

The CPA Education Foundation is a non-profit organization, with a mandate to promote accounting and business education in Alberta.

The Foundation acknowledges the value of diverse perspectives on board, and strives for a board that reflects the full range of Alberta CPAs. This wide range of voices and experience is particularly important for the Foundation as it works to support business education for students from varied backgrounds. As such, we are encourage applications from members of groups who have been historically underrepresented.

Nominations for 2023 have now closed and will open again in Spring 2024.

In most circumstances, both Discipline and Appeal Tribunals are comprised of three members—two CPA Alberta members appointed from CPA Alberta’s Discipline and Appeal Tribunal roster, and one public member appointed by from the Public Member roster established by the Government of Alberta.

Discipline Tribunals conduct hearings as to whether a Registrant’s conduct constitutes unprofessional conduct based on allegations of unprofessional conduct put forward by the Complaints Inquiry Committee (CIC) through a processes set out under the CPA Act.

Appeal Tribunals hear the appeals of certain decisions as set out under the CPA Act. Under the CPA Act, Appeal Tribunals are given broad powers in relation to the appeals that come before them. The vast majority of appeals that are heard by Appeal Tribunals relate to the decisions of the CIC Chair to dismiss discipline complaints or the decisions of Discipline Tribunals.

Practice Review Committee Members play an integral role in CPA Alberta’s practice review process by bringing their judgment, experience, and knowledge. The purpose of practice review is to promote high standards of practice in professional accounting firms and professional service providers, and in general maintain and improve the competence of the profession.

The objective of practice review process is the protection of the public by assessing the compliance with professional standards of firms that perform assurance, compilation and other specified engagements. The practice review process further protects the public by taking appropriate follow-up or remedial action in instances of non-compliance as well as provides an educational experience to CPAs and firms.

The Registration Committee is established in accordance with section 33 of the CPA Act. In accordance with the Act, the Registration Committee must consider and decide on application for registration, including imposition of conditions or restrictions on a registration. Registrants identified under the Act include CPAs, candidates, professional accounting firms, professional corporations, and professional service providers. Other registrant-related categories include pre-approved program route providers, limited liability partnerships, and specialists.

In addition to the general duties under Act, the Registration Committee will monitor, recommend, and establish registration policy and administrative practice. The Registration Committee is empowered to advise the Board on relevant strategy and policy matters for consideration and possible implementation by CPA Alberta.
