About the CPA Alberta Tax Preparation Program

The Tax Preparation Program was established in 1973. At that time, tax clinics were introduced as a public service with three pilot tax clinics being held. From mid-March to mid-April, volunteers visited senior citizen homes and social agencies in major centers across Alberta. Since 1973, the program has expanded to include over 100 organizations and more than 500 volunteers annually, however, the focus remains the same—a community service program designed to assist the elderly, disabled, unemployed, and new Canadian citizens that are financially disadvantaged complete their annual personal tax returns.

For the 2024 tax year, CPA Alberta's program was hosted in both in-person and virtual formats. The program engaged over 110+ volunteers and completed over 1,200+ tax returns for low income Albertans

Community Partners

A Community Partner is an organization that CPA Alberta partners with as part of the Tax Preparation Program, including seniors’ housing, newcomer organizations, colleges and post-secondary institutions, and social service agencies. These partners work directly with their clients and help connect low-income individuals to CPA Alberta’s free tax filing services.

While the formal tax season runs from March 1 to April 31, organizations can apply to become partners at any time of the year, and CPA Alberta will follow up with them in the fall to support registration and participation in the upcoming season.

We welcome organizations to add themselves to the list, please email: TaxPrep@cpaalberta.ca

Volunteers

The Tax Preparation Program relies on CPA members and PEP candidates to complete tax returns for Community Partners’ low-income clients so that they may access the benefits they need. Volunteer cases are assigned throughout the tax season, either virtually or in person based on preference, and are distributed as evenly as possible according to availability to ensure everyone gains experience.

While registration typically opens in the fall, we welcome interested volunteers to email us at any time. To be added to the volunteer list, please email: TaxPrep@cpaalberta.ca
