She was instrumental in guiding CPAs through COVID-19 challenges and actively volunteers at CPA events with organizations including Veterans’ Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House, and the CPA Education Foundation.

Why is it important for you to give back?
Growing up, my parents always volunteered for various clubs/groups and still do. My dad said a community relies on volunteers. It is what I knew, and it seemed natural to volunteer and give back.

Note of thanks
Thanks to all the amazing CPA Alberta staff and volunteers I've had the opportunity to work with over the years. To my family and friends for your continued support and encouragement. To my business partner, Jack Anderson, for always believing in me.

Amber JossSince 2019, Amber has tirelessly contributed to the Lethbridge Chapter of CPAs in leadership roles—including Chair, Vice-Chair, and Communications Lead—expanding professional development programs, fostering mentorship, and creating opportunities for members to connect and share expertise.

Amber also strengthened the broader business community through her role as the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce CEO’s Advisor on Finance, Governance, and Bylaw Reform, supporting financial oversight, governance improvements, and long-term organizational sustainability. She has also lent her expertise to Castle Mountain, advancing civic engagement, educational initiatives, and value-driven governance to sustain a vibrant regional institution.

Provincially, Amber chaired CPA Alberta’s Advisory and Collaboration Committee, uniting chapter and practitioner leaders to amplify the profession’s voice. Through strategic leadership, mentorship, and governance contributions, Amber has left a lasting, meaningful legacy that strengthens professional networks and community institutions across Southern Alberta.

How has being a CPA impacted you?
Being a CPA has shaped how I approach both my career and everyday life, encouraging a thoughtful, principled, and solution-oriented mindset. It has strengthened my critical thinking skills and instilled a commitment to lifelong learning. The designation has also opened many doors, providing a foundation of credibility and trust built by those who came before me and paved the way.

What about volunteering makes it rewarding for you?
Volunteering is rewarding because it deepens my connection to the community and allows me to use my skills to make a meaningful impact. It fills my cup to contribute where I’m needed and be part of something bigger than myself. Through volunteering, I’ve built strong relationships and found a sense of camaraderie with like-minded people. It has also challenged me to grow, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and developing new skills. Most importantly, it has taught me that being part of the solution is far more fulfilling than standing on the sidelines discussing obstacles.

Why is it important for you to give back?
I was fortunate to grow up with incredible role models in my parents, who led by example. My dad often said, “If you live in a community, you should serve it,” and I watched him embody that belief in ways that made a real difference in people’s lives. That experience shaped how I see the world. It showed me that people often underestimate the impact they can have—that one person can spark change that reaches far beyond what they initially imagine, influencing a community, an organization, or even an individual’s path. For me, giving back is about recognizing that potential. If you have the ability or the skills to contribute in some way, why wouldn’t you try?

What values do you live by?
I strive to live by a set of values rooted in integrity, respect, and service. I believe in living in a way that does no harm to others, because a life guided by that principle leaves little room for regret. Respect is something I extend to everyone, but I also believe trust is earned through consistent words and actions. To me, integrity means ensuring that what I say is reflected in what I do. Otherwise, words have little meaning. I also try to be mindful of how my decisions affect others, recognizing that our choices rarely impact only ourselves. Above all, I value contributing to something larger than myself and believe in living a life that serves and strengthens my community.

Who or what has been instrumental in your success and why?
The people who have been most instrumental in my success are those who shaped both my work ethic and my sense of purpose. My parents laid the foundation by teaching me the value of hard work, leading by example, and supporting me every step of the way. They were my biggest champions. Professionally, Bruce Thurston FCPA, FCMA played a pivotal role in my development. He mentored me, created opportunities, and helped guide my path, setting a standard I continue to strive toward. Equally important is my husband, whose constant support, patience, and encouragement have allowed me to pursue my goals while staying true to my values.

Note of thanks
Thanks to my parents for leading by example; to Bruce Thurston FCPA, FCMA, for his invaluable mentorship; and to my husband for his constant support, for being my sounding board, and for encouraging me through the long hours.

Mika FriesenMika has transformed the financial operations of the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton (SACE), demonstrating the profound impact a CPA can have on a not-for-profit organization.

Since joining as SACE’s first-ever CPA and Chief Financial Officer in 2022, Mika has led a comprehensive financial “clean-up”, implementing best practices across all operations while ensuring regulatory compliance. She implemented an accounts payable automation system, a human capital and payroll management platform, a donor relationship management system, and migrated to a financial institution that caters to SACE’s financial needs, reducing administrative burden agency-wide.

Mika’s tireless efforts have helped navigate significant funding cuts, layoffs, post-pandemic recovery, and a large office relocation. Her strategic insight, integrity, and calm guidance have strengthened governance, enhanced financial oversight, and ensured the organization can continue delivering critical services. By choosing to dedicate her expertise to SACE, Mika directly supports survivors of sexual violence and some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

What values do you live by?
The proverb “the boughs that bear most hang lowest” teaches us that true strength is shown through humility. The more we achieve, the more grounded we should become. Success is not a ladder to stand above others, but a responsibility to support, uplift, and serve. I hope to support those who need it, just as my family, friends, and mentors support me with selfless kindness.

Note of thanks
Thanks to Mary Jane James, Jennifer Forsyth CPA, CA, Hannah Graham CPA, Andre Corbould, SACE colleagues and board members, Trevor Friesen, Saya Friesen, Hayato Friesen, Dr. Katherine Smith, Dr. Alison Clifford, Dr. Shubha De, and Dr. Tim Darsaut.

Erin’s leadership, innovation, and dedication to developing future CPAs have transformed accounting education. As Director of the University of Alberta’s Master of Accounting (MAcc) program, she established one of only two CPA-accredited post-secondary programs in Western Canada, and the program’s students have had much success on the profession’s Common Final Examination. Erin oversees curriculum development, hires and mentors teaching staff, and is leading the program’s transition to Competency Map 2.0 and the new CPA Program.

A pioneer in hybrid, student-centred learning, Erin integrates real-world casework and career panels to bridge technical training and professional experience. She has served on faculty hiring committees, advocating for CPA-qualified instructors, and mentors educators to uphold high professional and teaching standards. Additionally, her research in auditing, professional judgment, and auditor independence has advanced the profession.

Through teaching, program leadership, and mentorship, Erin has strengthened CPA education, elevated standards, and impacted countless students across Alberta and Canada.

Through sustained volunteerism, leadership, and financial expertise, Murray has strengthened community programs, advanced research, and ensured Shelagh’s legacy inspires hope, compassion, and meaningful service across the province.

Note of thanks
Thanks to my sons, Sean and Kevin, and daughter-in-law, Alexandra, who were instrumental in caring for Shelagh at home until her passing in 2013. We were inspired by Shelagh’s desire to put her name and face on this horrific disease to promote awareness and raise funds for research. I would also like to thank my nominator and the ALS Society.
