Candidate statement

As a proud CPA for over 15 years, as well as Managing Partner of RMI LLP, a 46-person public practice firm in Calgary, I am seeking to serve on the CPA Board to give back to our profession and bring a strong voice for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and public practitioners.

My top priorities include strengthening governance over the CPA profession, improving how we engage with CRA on tax policy matters, and attracting new CPAs to a field I believe will remain vital and in high demand for generations to come. I am committed to ensuring our profession continues to grow in relevance, credibility, and public trust.

What sets me apart is the entrepreneurial approach I bring to a profession often grounded in pragmatism. Not only am I an avid entrepreneur, but I work daily with business owners and want to bring that same spirit of creativity and adaptability to the board. Our profession is evolving, and it needs voices that understand both traditional foundations and modern challenges.

I bring extensive governance experience, having served on boards such as the Better Business Bureau, various local and national Ismaili community committees, Enactus Calgary, and the Bow Valley College Accounting committee. These roles have honed my ability to listen, lead, and act decisively in complex environments.

Thank you for your consideration.

What do you see impacting the CPA profession, and how can CPA Alberta best respond?

The CPA profession in Alberta is undergoing a period of profound change. Technology, especially AI, is rapidly transforming how we work, automating many traditional functions and demanding new skill sets across both industry and public practice. At the same time, increasing regulatory complexity, evolving tax policy, and a shortage of new entrants to the profession are raising concerns about sustainability and capacity.

With over half of Alberta CPAs working in industry, the impacts of automation, data analytics, and governance expectations are especially significant. CPA Alberta must lead by equipping members across all sectors with relevant, future-ready education and training. But it must go beyond that—by being a visible voice in the business community and working closely with the government to shape fair and forward-looking taxation policies.

The profession also needs to evolve its mindset. CPAs must embrace a more entrepreneurial, tech-forward, and service-oriented approach to remain indispensable in a world where routine tasks are increasingly handled by machines. Strategic thinking, business insight, and ethical leadership will define the CPA of the future.

How do your skills and background position you to positively contribute to the CPA Alberta Board and lead the governance of the profession?

With over 15 years of experience in public practice and as Managing Partner of RMI LLP, I bring a practical understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing CPAs across Alberta. My role has required strategic leadership, team development, and deep client engagement with entrepreneurs and business owners, equipping me with the insight to advocate effectively for members across sectors.

What differentiates me is the blend of entrepreneurial thinking and governance experience I bring to the table. I’ve served on numerous boards, including the Better Business Bureau, Enactus Calgary, and the Ismaili National Settlement Committee. These roles have refined my ability to provide strong oversight, manage complex issues, and balance diverse stakeholder interests—skills that are essential for effective board governance.

I also understand the need for the profession to evolve in response to emerging technologies and shifting business expectations. I aim to bring a forward-looking, collaborative approach to the Board, rooted in innovation, accountability, and a commitment to the long-term strength of the CPA designation.
