10th Anniversary

Celebrating 10 years of a unified accounting profession in Alberta

On July 1, 2015, accountants from the three legacy designations—Certified General Accountants, Certified Management Accountants, and Chartered Accountants—were officially unified as Chartered Professional Accountants in Alberta.

Today, 10 years later, the profession in Alberta has grown from 27,000 members to more than 32,000 dedicated CPAs who exemplify integrity, leadership, and a commitment to serving the public good.
Unification has resulted in a strengthened protection of the public with just one common certification program, a single set of ethical and practice standards, and a common practice review and discipline process. It has helped eliminate market confusion surrounding the differences between the three designations. And it has strengthened the designation’s international influence and reputation.

For 10 years, Alberta CPAs have set the standard in professional excellence and ethical responsibility. They’ve been expert accountants and so much more— they’ve been trusted advisers, innovative leaders, and community builders. Together, the profession is stronger than ever.

As of July 1, 2025, Alberta CPAs have a new option for displaying their designation: they can now choose to use CPA alone and drop their legacy designation.
