Employer PPR FAQs

These FAQs are designed to help employers, Program Leaders, and Program Managers understand their responsibilities within the Pre-approved Program Route (PPR).

Use this page to find answers about practical experience reporting within the PPR, CPA reviews, program manager and program leader responsibilities, and PPR mentorship.

1. Getting Started

2. Practical Experience Reporting

As a pre-approved program provider, it is the program’s responsibility to ensure CPA candidates are updating their experience reporting in PERT and having mentor meetings semi-annually.

To export a listing of CPA candidates in non-compliance with their experience reporting requirements, go to EXPORT PROGRAM REPORTS in PERT.

3. CPA Review

Upon completion of the Practical Experience Requirements, a Completion CPA Review must be requested.

If the CPA candidate changes programs or employers, a Change of Job CPA Review must be requested within 90 days of the change.

When a PPR CPA candidate requests a CPA Review, the review is first sent to the Program Leader for certification.

Effective January 1, 2025, the Program Leader is responsible for certifying the candidate’s enabling competency responses. Refer the Employer Review Guidance - Enabling Competency document below.

Enabling Competency Review Process Change – Effective January 1, 2025

Enabling Competency Review – Training for Pre-approved Program Providers

When the Program Leader certifies the review, it is then sent to CPA Alberta for review and approval.

If the CPA candidate is working in public accounting, they must ensure the Chargeable Hours Form, document below, is completed, signed, and attached to their last experience report within PERT.

4. Program Manager

Enter the last date of their employment by clicking Employment Ended within PERT for the CPA candidate(s). This will notify the provincial/regional body. Review the PERT Guide for Program Managers  (see document below) for instructions on Employment Ended.

When CPA candidates leave an organization, they are required to update their employment information within 90 days of the change. This involves completing experience reports that relate to that organization and requesting a Change of Job CPA Review. When offboarding CPA candidates, it is recommended that you remind them of this requirement. Additionally, we recommend providing them with the leave days they are to report for accuracy.

Complete the Request for Addition/Change in Pre-approved Program Route Leader or Program Manager form (see document below) if you would like to add or make a change.

Send the completed form via email to ppr@cpaalberta.ca.

Request for Addition/Change in Pre-approved Program Route Leader or Program Manager

If you cannot see all of the CPA candidates once you log in to PERT, it is likely because they have not created a PERT profile or updated their PERT profile to indicate employment in your program. Refer to the Program Manager Checklist when adding a candidate.

Once a CPA candidate creates a profile in PERT and/or indicates employment in your program, you will receive an automated email to confirm the CPA candidate’s employment information. Once you are logged in, you will be able to see a full listing of CPA candidates who have indicated employment in your program.

For more information, please refer to the PERT Guide for Program Managers, which is available on the webpage below.

5. Program Leader

As a Program Leader, you are able to view the details of the CPA candidates in your program(s) who have requested a CPA Review.

CPA candidates request a CPA Review when they are departing from your program or when they are ready for certification.

To export a listing of CPA candidates in your PPR, go to EXPORT PROGRAM REPORTS in PERT.

  • Review experience reports for completeness, accuracy, and reasonability.
  • Run the Consolidated Summary to see a full summary of what has been reported.
  • Confirm the start and end dates are accurate and verify leaves taken.
  • Confirm that the CPA candidate was appropriately mentored and supervised while in the program.
    • If you select 'Disagree', please provide comments for the CPA Reviewer.

For more information, please refer to the PERT Guide for Program Leaders or the Program Leader checklist, which are available on the webpage below.

PPR Guides and Resources

You can select 'Disagree' to question 1 or 2 in the 'Pre-approved Program Leader Declaration' in PERT.

If you select 'Disagree', you will be prompted to provide comments as to why you disagree, the CPA Review will be cancelled, and the candidate will receive an email with your comments.

Email CPA Alberta’s Practical Experience Team at ppr@cpaalberta.ca.

6. Mentorship

The program leader or manager will assign an approved mentor to the CPA candidate. If a mentor should leave or change organizations, a new mentor should be assigned within 30 days.

CPA candidates are required to have mentor meetings semi-annually. It is the responsibility of the program leader and manager to monitor that meetings occur and to follow up if they are missed.

To export a listing of CPA candidates in non-compliance with their mentor meeting requirements, go to EXPORT PROGRAM REPORTS in PERT.

Yes. Within a pre-approved program, one person can hold multiple roles.

7. Practical Experience Reporting Tool (PERT)

Data Check may be enabled for PPRs. This requires a CPA Review to go to the Program Manager for verification before it goes to the Program Leader for certification.

Data Check is optional, and not all PPRs will request that this feature be enabled. If you would like to discuss enabling this feature, reach out to the Practical Experience team at ppr@cpaalberta.ca.
