Employer EVR FAQs

These FAQs are designed to help employers and supervisors understand how to support CPA candidates completing their practical experience through the Experience Verification Route (EVR).

Use this page to find answers about employer and supervisor responsibilities, practical experience reporting, and CPA reviews as CPA candidates work toward certification.

1. Getting Started

If you are an employer with CPA candidates in the EVR route, they will need a supervisor in a position senior to them.

A supervisor needs to be able to accurately verify a CPA candidate’s reported job duties during the time period covered in their experience report. The supervisor does not need to be a CPA.

Please refer to the PERT Supervisor Guide below for more information.

2. Practical Experience Reporting

To better understand the practical experience requirements, please visit the link below to learn more the requirements for candidates.

We encourage you to review the Guiding Questions and Practical Experience Rubric document (see below) for more information on what is required for proficiency in each technical competency area.

CPA candidates working in the Experience Verification Route need to report regularly to receive feedback on their progression toward the practical experience requirements. It might be beneficial to review this feedback with your CPA candidate to determine which competency areas they need to develop. If needed, you can speak with a member of the Practical Experience team to better understand the feedback. Reach out to them at practicalexperience@cpaalberta.ca.

3. CPA Review

The first CPA Review request is for the pre-assessment. A CPA candidate will need an employment verification letter outlining their position title, job responsibilities, and an employment start date.

As directed by the profession

  • CPA candidates should follow the Next CPA Review Due Date in their PERT profile found on the home page; this date is directed by the profession.
  • Most commonly, CPA candidates will request a review of their first experience report to the profession after working 12 months in their role; a 12-month CPA Review must be requested.
  • If CPA Alberta, through the pre-assessment, deems that the CPA candidate may require additional guidance, they may be requested to report earlier.
  • After this initial review, CPA Alberta will direct CPA candidates when to report next; this may be at completion, or earlier if deemed necessary.

Change of Job

  • If the CPA candidate changes positions or employers, a Change of Job CPA Review must be requested within 90 days of the employment change.
  • If work responsibilities have changed significantly following a change of position, role, or a promotion, then a Change of Job CPA Review should be requested, followed by a new pre-assessment.

Completion

  • Upon completion of the Practical Experience Requirements, a Completion CPA Review must be requested.

Before a CPA candidate can request a CPA Review, they will need their experience report in PERT verified by you as the supervisor.

Supervisors do not have a login for PERT. If you are also a mentor, please note that you cannot perform supervisor verification through your mentor portal. You will receive a system-generated email with a unique link to perform verification. You are responsible for verifying the factual accuracy of the work examples provided. Please refer to the PERT Supervisor Guide (document below) for more information.

When you are performing supervisor verification, please ensure you click through each tab of the CPA candidate’s experience report and complete the Declarations at the end before exiting the webpage.

If the CPA candidate is working in public accounting, they must ensure the Chargeable Hours Form is completed, signed by the designated firm partner, and attached to their last experience report in PERT.
