What is the Experience Verification Route?

This flexible route allows CPA candidates to gain relevant experience at an employer of choice.

  • As the Experience Verification Route is self-directed, it can take longer than 30 months for CPA candidates to meet the overall experience requirements.
  • CPA candidates may need to work in more than one role or organization to complete the depth, breadth, and core requirements.
  • CPA candidates are responsible for completing detailed experience reports in PERT and meeting with their mentor semi-annually.
  • Supervisors must hold a position senior to the CPA candidate and be able to verify the factual accuracy of experience reports.
  • CPA candidates are responsible for requesting CPA Reviews from the profession for their verified self-assessed experience reports at key milestones.

  • CPA candidates following the Experience Verification Route begin by submitting their employment information through a Pre-assessment CPA Review to determine if qualifying work is available and the practical experience requirements start date.
  • A pre-assessment experience report is prepared in PERT and needs to provide documents with the job description and employment start date at the chosen organization.
  • After a Change of Job CPA Review, CPA candidates must request a new pre-assessment each time they change jobs.
  • No competencies or duration is awarded in the pre-assessment experience report. The purpose is to validate whether a CPA candidate is in a relevant role that meets CPA’s requirement of achieving at least one technical sub-competency to a Level 1 proficiency.
  • Once completed and approved, CPA candidates can begin reporting their experience.
