Join the Edmonton Chapter of CPAs as they host an informative session on "Navigating Changes in Tariffs and Trade" by Peter Mitchell CPA, CA.
About the speaker
Peter has practiced commodity taxes (mainly GST and customs) since 1988 with Ernst & Young LLP, Felesky Flynn LLP and in his own practice. When he began, Canada had high tariffs and was negotiating its first free trade agreement with the United States. That agreement later evolved into NAFTA and then the current USMCA. We now appear to have come full cycle with the United States pushing for high tariffs on goods imported from all countries, including Canada.
Peter has published papers and spoken at tax conferences his entire career – for CPA Canada, CPA Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation and other organizations. In 2005 he was granted a Distinguished Service Award for professionalism by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta. In 2014 Peter received the Normand Guerin Award for the best paper at the annual Commodity Tax Symposium run by CPA Canada. The paper discussed the major sales tax and customs issues faced by the oil and gas industry.
