Entrepreneurial CPAs - Brewing! Chocolate! Distilling!

Have you ever considered diving into something completely different? Or changing the path you are on? How about telling off the boss? You certainly can when the boss is YOU!

Our amazing group of entrepreneurs are all designated accountants who decided to venture into unfamiliar territory. They each took challenges head-on by leaving their “safe” environments to start up their own completely-non-accounting businesses.

This group will tell you what they did, how they did it, and the many challenges they faced as they set out to pursue new dreams. Each one is at a different point in their entrepreneurial journey: from start-up phase, to part-time entrepreneur, to established business. They will have relevant, timely advice and information to share.

Left to right: Charlie Bredo, Lana Berg, and Bryan Anderson

Charlie Bredo, CPA, CA - Co-Founder of Troubled Monk Brewery

Charlie Bredo obtained his CA through experience at Deloitte and Collins Barrow before joining a real estate investment firm as the VP of Operations. Excited for a new challenge, he started Bow Valley Power in Canmore. He grew the electricity retailer to over 120 Albertan communities before selling it in June 2015. He then co-founded Troubled Monk Brewery in Red Deer. Troubled Monk focuses on making hand crafted beer, soda and spirits. They have grown significantly in the past few years, completing two expansions with another planned for early 2018. Troubled Monk beer is available throughout Alberta and the brewery is proud to have won awards at the local, national, and international levels.

Lana Berg, CPA, CA - Owner of Lockhart's Chocolates

Lana Berg obtained her CA through experience at PwC, then moved to a senior financial reporting role for a multi-million dollar international company, followed by consulting in the recruitment of accounting and finance executives. In 2016, she decided to pursue her artistic passion and love of chocolate by embarking on an entrepreneurial endeavour - Lockhart's Chocolate. She specializes in hand crafted artisan chocolate creations.

Bryan Anderson, CPA, CA - President at Lone Pine Distilling

Bryan Anderson recently resigned as a Partner at Deloitte LLP in Tax, after serving a wide variety of clients. Bryan focused his career on tax since obtaining his CA, assisting both private and public companies. He has also been a CICA Group Study, Part 2 In-depth tax leader and In Residence, Part 1 Group leader for multiple years. Bryan is the co-founder of Lone Pine Distilling Inc., a start-up craft distillery to be located in Edmonton. Bryan developed the business plan, financial model, and related materials to raise capital for a new distilling business in the Alberta market. Currently, they are securing a location, performing renovations and installing equipment to start operations. Concurrently, recipe and product development activities are occurring prior to full operational start-up.
